About
Welcome! I am a second year MLIS student at University of Iowa. I currently work as a student assistant at the Rita Benton Music Library at the University of Iowa, a research assistant to Patricia Katapol, and as a developer on a digital project with the School of Music to make the performances of faculty and students that are recorded by the Iowa recording studios streamable via an online database. The project was originally concieved as a class project in a Database Systems course. This past summer we received a grant to fund, expand and implement it in partnership with the Iowa Digital Library.
Recently, my guest post Too Gay, or Not Too Gay: That is the Question for the blog Hack Library School received some attention. It was included in the February 13, 2013 edition of American Libraries Direct. It has been a pleasure to engage in conversation with the library community about the balancing act of managing a personal identity and professional persona.
I'm also an editor for our Student Library Journal B Sides. This past summer I was a Library Intern at Interlochen Arts Academy working in the Bonisteel Academic Library. Before pursuing my MLIS, I was a music teacher in the DC area for three years. I participated in the New Teacher Project and worked in a low income middle school. It was both the best and hardest thing I ever did, and I learned more than I ever thought possible. I've recently taken up running and I'm not sure how I lived without it all these years.
My anticipated graduation date is May 2013.
My professional interests include Music/Fine Arts Librarianship, LGBTQ and other diversity outreach services, Open Access, Undergraduate Outreach, Informational Literacy, Digitalization of media, and Teen Services
